Strange Sounds

Last Night my wife about drove me nuts. She has lived in this house and experienced its strangeness the same as I have. You would think she would figure that strange noises and no confirmation as to their source would be taken in stride. I guess, with women, that just doesn't happen. Last night, I was in the Den drawing and my wife was working on the computer. There is a strange sound, sort of like a walnut rolling down a wooden floor." Did I hear that?" "Yes I did" "Well what was it?" " I really don't know but it must have been nothing because neither dog has stirred." A little later, "I heard walking upstairs and somebody pulled out a drawer." I go check, my younger little black schnauzer tags along. The older salt and pepper Schnauzer lazily watches us go. We go upstairs as the room over the Library is about the only room anyone could be pulling drawers and possibly be heard downstairs. The upstairs is quiet. We go to the Noah room first, no sign of anything; we then go though each upstairs room....nothing is amiss and nothing is missing. We go back downstairs and report. My wife says she heard me walking upstairs and it sounded just like the footsteps she heard. Footsteps sounding in this house is not new, it happens frequently, I tell her. "Maybe so, but these stopped to open a drawer." What did she hear? It seems to me that nothing can get by these two mutts of ours, yet neither seemed a bit nervous last night. A prowler going through the upstairs of a strange house, with two noisey dogs, while the owners are at home, seems a bit much. Talk about nerve. I'm certain the sounds originated with the house. My wife thinks we had a burgler. There was a rash of burgleries in the neighborhood which included two, possibly, three private homes and three businesses. So the wife may have been jumpy from that; but how anyone could have gotten in and out without detection by myself or our dogs and left empty handed would be as strange (to me, at lest) as an old house having a senior moment. We approach the time of year when the house starts experiencing the weird. Lets hope they remain "haunts" and not the real thing.
